NGC 10 (= PGC 634)
Discovered (Sep 25, 1834) by John Herschel
A magnitude 12.5 spiral galaxy (type SAB(rs)bc?) in Sculptor (RA 00 08 34.6, Dec -33 51 30)
Historical Identification: Per Dreyer, NGC 10 (= GC 3 = JH 4015, 1860 RA 00 01 28, NPD 124 38.9) is "faint, considerably large, very little extended, gradually a little brighter middle". The position precesses to RA 00 08 35.5, Dec -33 52 08, only one second of time east and 0.7 arcmin south of the center of the galaxy listed above and nearly within its outline, so the identification is certain.
Historical Note: Save for round-off errors in the position, the NGC entry is identical to the GC entry.
Physical Information: Based on its recessional velocity of 6810 km/sec, NGC 10 is about 315 to 320 million light years away, in good agreement with redshift-independent distance estimates of 235 to 365 million light years. Given that and its apparent size of about 2.35 by 1.35 arcmin (from the images below), it is about 215 to 220 thousand light years across.
