The Eagle Nebula (IC 4703)

A large-scale image of IC 4703, which see for a detailed discussion of the nebula. The nebula is lit by the star cluster (M16) just to the left of the "Pillars of Creation" (near image center). As a result of considerable historical confusion, the nebula is usually referred to as M16, and the fact that Messier only observed the cluster is generally unknown or ignored.
