Hickson Compact Group 87 (=
PGC 65409, 65412 and 65415)
Hubble Space Telescope color composite of HCG 87
Above, an HST color-composite image of HCG 87, based on APoD100706, which see for credits (PGC 65414 is not part of the group, but a more distant galaxy). The views on this page are rotated relative to the APoD version, to place North at the top. Below, a Wikisky view of the same 2.4 arcmin wide region illustrates the difference in resolution between HST images and typical full-sky surveys (even more detailed HST views are shown at the individual entries, below).

PGC 65409
A 15th-(B)magnitude lenticular galaxy (type SA(r)0?) in
Capricornus (RA 20 48 11, Dec -19 51 23)
A member of Hickson Compact Group 87, which see for a wide-field view of the region. Based on recessional velocity of 8740 km/sec, about 390 million light years away. Given that and apparent size of 0.7 by 0.6 arcmin, about 80 thousand light years across.

PGC 65412
A 16th-(B)magnitude spiral galaxy (type Sb) in
Capricornus (RA 20 48 12, Dec -19 49 56)
A member of Hickson Compact Group 87, which see for a wide-field view of the region. Based on recessional velocity of 8915 km/sec, about 400 million light years away, in reasonable agreement with redshift-independent distance estimates of 335 to 380 million light years. Given that and apparent size of 0.7 by 0.2 arcmin, about 80 thousand light years across.

PGC 65414
An 18th-(B)magnitude spiral galaxy (type Sd?) in
Capricornus (RA 20 48 13, Dec -19 50 46)
Though in the same direction as Hickson Compact Group 87, and therefore sometimes referred to as HCG87D, it is at least 50 million light years beyond the group. Based on recessional velocity of 10200 km/sec, about 455 million light years away. Given that and apparent size of 0.26 by 0.19 arcmin, about 35 thousand light years across.

See Hickson Compact Group 87, above, for a wide-field view of the region

PGC 65415
A 15th-(B)magnitude edge-on spiral galaxy (type S0 pec) in
Capricornus (RA 10 48 15, Dec -19 50 58)
A member of Hickson Compact Group 87, which see for a wide-field view of the region. Based on recessional velocity of 8445 km/sec, about 375 million light years away. Given that and apparent size of 1.6 by 0.3 arcmin, about 175 thousand light years across.
