(possessive form Velorum, abbreviation Vel; formerly part of Argo Navis)
 Vela was created as part of a subdivision of Argo Navis by Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille in 1756, but was not introduced to the public until the posthumous publication of his work in 1763.
